Melbourne, Australia’s garage punkers Blowers released their debut LP on Spooky Records this month. This lo-fi, chaotic record thrashes through 15 songs with a central “theme around giving zero fucks” according to the band.
The trudging 1-2 drum beats pull the songs through a sonic mudscape previously traveled by the Gories, the Mummies, Oblivians and the Reatards. Some of my favorite tracks include “I’m Too Old For This Shit” and “Hate that Shit.” Some of their songs that don’t have profanities in the titles are pretty good too. Check out a video for the lead song “Ripped” right here:
The band recorded the album themselves, and then handed the tracks to Mikey Young of Eddy Current Suppression Ring, who masterfully mixed the recordings on an old Tascam 4-track tape recorder. The result is a trashy, loud, exciting record that really doesn’t give a fuck, in a good way.
Blowers is a bit of a Melbourne garage rock supergroup, with members previously doing time in Brat Farrar, Kit Convict & Thee Terrible Two, Juliette Seizure & The Tremor-Dolls and many more bands.
The album was released on poison green colored vinyl and is split release between Spooky Records (Australia) and Chaputa Records (Portugal). If you’re lucky enough to live in Australia, they’ve got a gig coming up April 17th in Melbourne. Imagine that, being able to see live music because you live in a country that figured out how to get COVID-19 under control…
Check out Ripped on the Punk Rock in Exile Spotify playlist, or jam the whole album!
Vinyl is available from the Spooky Records webstore or from the band’s Bandcamp page.
