Song Spotlight is a weekly feature where we cover one song that is currently on the Punk Rock in Exile Spotify playlist. Sometimes it is a brand new song, sometimes a little older but one we thought we should call attention to.
Nutshell is a Belgian band that plays noisy, chaotic, hooky punk rock. They released a five-song EP in February 2021 and “The Malthusian Trap” is my favorite song.
The four minute song starts out channelling DC pre-emo bands like Rites of Spring, Three and Dag Nasty, charting the same territory picked up in the 1990s by Virginia-based hardcore band Avail. About halfway through the song they bust out some Swahili (no really) and then add about 25 extra guitars and get heavy as heck.
I generally like my punk rock songs short and to the point. This one is long and to the point. And it rules.
Check it out on the Punk Rock in Exile Spotify playlist or buy the 5 song EP for a measly 4 euros from their Bandcamp page.
