Lost Planet Airmen are a newish band from Winnipeg, who have released a handful of singles during the pandemic. Their first two songs, “The Bright Side (of Genocide)” and “Peaked in High School” had me thinking that these Lost Planet Airmen must have originally gotten lost in Berkeley, CA in the early 1990s – their songs would fit right in on an early Lookout Records compilation between Pinhead Gunpowder, Fifteen and Green Day.
Their latest single “XXII” – released January 22, 2021 – slows the tempo down quite a bit and showcases the bass lines, while singer Taylor Stephenson gets personal about the mass shooting that happened in Nova Scotia in April 2020 – where 22 died from a single gunman – and the country’s reaction to an assault weapons ban (spoiler: much like in America, it sounds like there’s a bunch of internet keyboard warriors yelling “BUT MAH GUNNZZZ!” north of the border too…).
Starting a band in the middle of a pandemic is hard as heck and I’m glad these guys are finding ways to get creative and get their music out. I’m looking forward to hearing a full-length album in the future.
